Dental and x-rays

Learn More with Dental and Digital X-Rays

Dental X-rays are essential tools to diagnose the state of your oral health. At South Point Family Dentistry, we use the latest in digital X-ray technology to learn more about your dental health that may not be visible during a routine exam.

Digital X-rays use an electric sensor instead of film to capture the image on a computer. The x-ray can be immediately viewed on a monitor, helping to detect problems faster and easier.

Dental X-Rays Can Reveal:

  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Decay between the teeth
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Poor tooth and root positions
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gumline

Safely Taking a Comprehensive Oral Picture

Digital X-ray technology reduces radiation by 80-90% compared the already minimal amount from traditional X-rays. You should have nothing to fear from the radiation involved in X-rays. The amount of radiation exposure from a full series of X-rays is equivalent to the amount you would receive in a single day from natural sources.

How Often Are X-Rays Necessary?

The need for dental X-rays to be taken depends on your individual health
needs. A full mouth series of dental X-rays is recommended for all new
patients at South Point Family Dentistry. This is usually good for three to five years.

Bitewing X-rays of your top and bottom teeth biting together are taken at checkups and are recommended once or twice a year in case of any new dental problems.
