The Benefits of Dental Crowns

Protect Your Teeth

Cavities and infections don't only cause pain. They also weaken the structures of teeth. Dental crowns are caps that cover compromised teeth, strengthening them and protecting them from further damage.

Save Money

Avoid More Costly Dentistry

If you don't cover a compromised tooth with a crown, it may eventually require extraction and replacement with a dental implant, which can cost thousands more than a simple crown. Choosing the more affordable option now can result in significant savings.

Enhance Your Smile

Custom-designed dental crowns from our dentists in Belmont can upgrade the appearance of your smile. These prosthetics can disguise discoloration, structural damage, and poorly shaped teeth.

Don't Delay Treatment! Restore Your Smile Today

If you are experiencing symptoms of a tooth problem, it is important to visit the dentist right away. Without proper treatment, your dental condition will likely get worse and may even cause you to lose your tooth.

Dental Crown Treatment A Simple and Effective Form of Restorative Dentistry

Dental crowns are a tried and true method of repairing a wide range of dental conditions. With proper dental care and maintenance, they can protect your teeth for over a decade. Our Belmont, NC, dental practice crafts high-quality, lifelike restorations that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Take a look at how dental crowns are placed...

After reshaping the natural enamel, our dentists can place a precisely designed cap over the natural tooth.

How Do I Know I Need A Dental Crown?

The only way to know for sure if you need a dental crown is to get checked out by the dentist. While pain, temperature sensitivity, and swelling are common symptoms of infection, we can't diagnose your condition without seeing you in person.

Meanwhile, it is possible to have a serious tooth problem without even noticing.  Routine dental check-ups are the best way to monitor your oral health and the treatments you need in a timely manner.

Are Dental Crowns Covered By Insurance?

If you are getting a crown for health purposes, your dental insurance will likely cover at least part of your treatment costs. Our Belmont, NC, practice accepts most major insurance carriers and will work directly with your provider to get the most from your benefits.

If you are getting a crown purely to enhance the color or shape of a tooth, treatment is classified as cosmetic dentistry.  Unlike restorative dentistry, cosmetic treatment is not usually covered by insurance. Fortunately, our office accepts flexible financing through CareCredit® allowing you to make affordable monthly payments on the cost of dental care.

If you are interested in learning more about financing or want to get a cost estimate for your dental crown, please schedule a consultation with our dentist today.

Dental Crown Timeline

Receiving a new crown at our Belmont, NC, dental practice typically requires two appointments over two to three weeks' time. Here is what you can expect during your treatment...

Our Belmont practice crafts high-quality, lifelike restorations that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Tooth Preparation

After numbing your mouth, one of our dentists will prepare the compromised tooth by cleaning and removing any decay. Root canal therapy may be required to extract infected tissue. Once the tooth is free of decay, we will remove a small layer of enamel to make room for the cap.

Impressions

Our dentist will take impressions of the treated tooth. We then send these impressions to our trusted dental lab, where they will craft your prosthetic out of the material of your choice. We will discuss with you the benefits of the different materials (including porcelain, resin, and metals) so you can make an informed decision.

Temporary Crown

We will place a temporary crown to protect against further damage while your permanent crown is being made. Since temporary crowns are held in place with temporary cement, be careful not to eat any excessively hard or sticky foods while it is in place.

Crafting Custom Restorations

The skilled technicians at our partner lab will need one to two weeks to custom-craft your permanent crown. Once the restoration is complete, it is sent back to our Belmont office for placement.

Permanent Crown

When your permanent crown is ready, you will return to our office to switch out your temporary crown. Our dentist will check the look and fit of the restoration and make any necessary adjustments. Then, we will use a special dental cement to secure the crown over your tooth.

Dental Crowns For Missing Teeth A Closer Look at Implant-Supported Restorations

A missing tooth can affect your self-esteem and can lead to more serious oral health problems when left untreated. With advances in modern dentistry, you don't need to live with a gap in your smile.

One of the best solutions for missing teeth is a dental implant.  Unlike traditional prosthetics that rest on top of the gumline, implants are inserted into the jawbone in place of the missing tooth root. This provides crucial stimulation to the bone tissue and prevents jaw recession.

Once the implant is secure, it is topped with a custom-made restoration. For a single missing tooth, your dentist will design an implant-supported crown to complete your smile.

An implant-supported crown doesn’t just restore the missing tooth, it also replaces the tooth root, which is essential for encouraging regenerative bone growth where the tooth was lost.

Wonderful experience, Dr. McCord was attentive, courteous and completed all my dental work in one visit. I recently relocated to Moore, SC from Charleston and needed to find a new dentist. A friend that lives in Belmont highly recommended South Point Family Denistry. Though it was a two hour drive, I am so glad I made the trip. Upon arrival I was immediately welcomed by the staff and promptly taken back to the procedure room. Dr. McCord took the time to explain what needed to be done and addressed my bite issue that caused the problem. I was extremely pleased with the result of his treatment plan. The entire staff was friendly and professional. I will be returning for any future dental needs.

Ensuring Natural-Looking Results

Our Belmont dentists take special care to design custom, natural-looking restorations. While crowns in the past were made from conspicuous amalgam metals, we use modern tooth-colored alternatives like porcelain. Porcelain and other similar ceramic material are highly durable and look virtually indistinguishable from natural enamel.

During your consultation, we will use a shade guide to identify the perfect color porcelain for your dental crown. The designs along with your impressions are then sent to our partner dental lab for production.

Our permanent crowns are always handcrafted by lab technicians to ensure the highest quality aesthetics. While all these steps take a little extra time, the impeccable results are worth the effort.

Each crown we place is custom-designed to artfully blend in with your other teeth. We want people looking at your smile, not your dental work.

Maintaining Your Dental Crown

With proper dental care, our high-quality crowns often last well over a decade before needing replacement. To ensure your results last as long as possible, please follow a few simple instructions.

Watch What You Eat

While our crowns are made from premium durable materials, they are not completely indestructible. Just like your natural teeth, your restoration can crack or chip when placed under excessive pressure. Avoid chewing on particularly hard foods like toffee and refrain from opening packages with your teeth.

Prevent Wear

If you are prone to grinding your teeth (a condition known as bruxism), you may want to wear a mouthguard while you sleep. Excessive grinding can wear down the surfaces of your teeth as well as your crown. If the problem is persistent, please ask your dentist about possible bruxism therapies that can help you protect your smile.

Practice Thorough Hygiene

The best way to care for your crown and your natural teeth is to develop a thorough and consistent oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft toothbrush and floss at least once a day. When you floss a temporary crown, pull the string from front to back rather than up and down the sides of your teeth. This will prevent snagging the edges of your crown and dislodging the cement.

Attend Regular Check-Ups

We recommend that you visit the dentist at least twice a year for a check-up and professional cleaning. At these appointments, we will examine the integrity of your crown and make sure it is secure. If needed, we will provide minor repairs and maintenance to keep the existing crown functional for longer.
