Teeth Whitening

While many of us wish we had a bright smile, it's incredibly easy for our enamel to change shades over time. Aging, diet, and smoking can all discolor your teeth, making them appear yellow or gray.

If you want to rejuvenate your smile — and your confidence — consider teeth whitening at South Point Family Dentistry in Belmont, NC.

How Does Tooth Whitening Work?

Whitening liquid being filled in dental tray
Teeth whitening treatments use a hydrogen peroxide solution placed in custom trays. The hydrogen peroxide whitens your enamel, resulting in a visibly brighter smile. Dr. Gary McCord and Dr. Ashley Starr can explain the entire teeth whitening process during your consultation at our Belmont dental office.

Brighter, More Confident Smiles The Stunning Results of Teeth Whitening

Your at-home teeth whitening kit will work to bleach the enamel of each tooth. After you apply the hydrogen peroxide solution to the custom trays and follow the full treatment schedule, you should see visibly whiter enamel — and a beautiful smile.

How Your Teeth Whitening Treatment Will Go At South Point Family Dentistry

Consultation

Before we begin your whitening treatment, we typically begin with a consultation. Our dentists, Dr. McCord or Dr. Starr, will discuss your whitening goals and answer all your teeth bleaching questions. Then, if you wish to continue, we'll make your appointment for a tray fitting.

Fitting

Our whitening trays offer a more effective bleaching treatment because they are custom-made to fit your teeth. This gives you more precise results than over-the-counter kits and whitening toothpastes. You will be fitted for the trays in our office and then we will make the whitening kits in-house. Once your kit is completed, you can begin your treatment.

Whitening

To whiten your teeth, put the solution in the trays and wear as directed. It usually takes multiple applications over a series of days or weeks for results to become apparent. Make sure to follow all instructions carefully. If you have any questions about treatment, you can always reach out to our dentists for answers.

Got a Busy Schedule?

We Offer Flexible Appointments

South Point Family Dentistry understands that you have a lot on your plate. Instead of you trying to fit an appointment into your busy schedule, we aim to fit you into our flexible schedule. That also means if you ever experience a dental emergency, we're here to assist, giving you the attention and peace of mind you deserve.

We're open from 7 am to 7 pm multiple days a week. We also have Saturday hours, making it easier for you to find a time that works best. Our Belmont office is conveniently located for patients in and near Charlotte.

When Combined With Other Cosmetic Procedures Teeth Whitening Can Be Even More Effective

Cosmetic dentistry doesn't just make your teeth brighter and whiter. It can also straighten your teeth and address other aesthetic flaws. For superior results, you can combine tooth whitening with Invisalign® and gum grafting.

Invisalign carefully moves your teeth into proper alignment while gum grafting can address problems caused by periodontal disease and recession. These dental treatments combined with whitening can create a gorgeous new smile that will last.

Proper Dental Care After Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening can provide dazzling results, but it's important to remember that the effects aren't permanent. In order to keep your smile looking bright and healthy for as long as possible after your treatment, follow these simple guidelines:

Refrain from Smoking

Smoking can discolor your teeth, making them look yellower. It can also have disastrous effects on your cardiovascular health.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

To maintain your results, brush your teeth, tongue, and gums twice daily for two minutes. This will prevent plaque build-up and cavities.

Floss Once a Day

When food gets stuck between teeth, it can lead to tartar build-up and cavities, which can tarnish tooth whitening results. Flossing regularly can prevent that problem.

Attend Regular Dental Visits

In addition to conducting proper oral hygiene, you should see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. They can ensure that your teeth stay beautiful and healthy.

If at any point you notice the results of teeth whitening beginning to fade, we can provide a touch-up treatment to make your smile bright and brilliant again.

A Teeth-Whitening Friendly Diet

Once you've successfully completed your cosmetic whitening treatment, you'll want to protect your results. The first two days after your whitening are the most important for ensuring the proper changes in your enamel. During this time, you should avoid these foods and drinks:

  • Candy
  • Soda
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Coffee
  • Berries
  • Tea
  • Fruit Juice
  • Red Wine

After the first few days have passed, you can have these foods again, but you should do so sparingly and mindfully.

For More Effective Results Choose Our Whitening Kits Over Whitening Toothpaste

Professional dental bleaching lightens the shade of your tooth enamel, resulting in visibly whiter teeth. It also is more effective than over-the-counter whitening toothpaste.

Professional Teeth Whitening vs. Over-the-Counter Whitening

With their low prices and compelling advertising, we understand why it might be tempting to take a chance on the many over-the-counter whitening products available in supermarkets, drug stores, and big box stores. However, here are some reasons why we recommend seriously considering whitening treatment by our dentists:

Predictable Outcomes

When you choose teeth whitening treatment coordinated by a dentist, you can count on an accurate treatment timeline to deliver results that meet your expectations. Over-the-counter treatments can be far less predictable. If you want your smile to look incredible for an upcoming event such as a wedding, you need to know that your teeth whitening treatment will deliver. By choosing to undergo professional teeth whitening overseen by our Belmont dental office, you can be sure that you are on your way to achieving the bright, beautiful smile you want.

Comfort and Safety

Over-the-counter teeth whitening products tend to be one-size-fits-all. But what if you have especially sensitive teeth? What if you happen to be allergic to the active ingredient? When you choose to undergo whitening by our dentists in Belmont, you can expect that your treatment will be tailored to your comfort and your goals. Perhaps most importantly, we will take precautions to make sure the only reactions you experience are big, beaming smiles thanks to results that help you look your absolute best.

Customization

Do you have crowns, bonding, or other restorations that don't respond to teeth whitening? You could find yourself with strikingly uneven results if you self-administer an over-the-counter whitening product. But by choosing a dentist to customize your treatment, they can make sure that your teeth are brightened to a shade that matches your dental work, giving you a result that looks flattering and natural.

Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

After you whiten your teeth, you may notice some sensitivity. Your dentist can talk to you about possible over-the-counter pain relief beforehand so that you are prepared.

After treatment, you should try to eat simple, soft foods like oatmeal, bananas, or smoothies to alleviate any gum or tooth sensitivity. Even if your gums or teeth hurt, please remember not to neglect your brushing or flossing.

The irritation should subside within a few days. If it continues, we are here to help.
